3 Easy Ways to Cut Your Business Costs by 30% This Month

Happy Memorial Day! As we honor and remember those who have served today, I also want to share some practical ways to keep your business strong.

If you feel like you are working harder than ever but your bank account isn’t showing it, you are not alone. In my 25 years of helping business owners, I’ve seen this story a thousand times. You’re making sales, your customers are happy, but at the end of the month, the profit just isn't there.

Most entrepreneurs think they need to sell more to fix their money problems. But sometimes, the fastest way to improve your cash flow is to stop the money from leaking out of your business. I’m talking about simple, everyday costs that add up and eat away at your hard work.

Today, I want to share three easy ways to cut your business costs by as much as 30% this month. These are not complicated tricks. They are practical steps I use every day as an affordable small business consultant to help my clients keep more of what they earn.

Let's dive in.

1. The "Hidden Leak": Audit Your Monthly Bills

The easiest place to find extra money is in your bank statement. We live in a world of monthly subscriptions. You sign up for a tool to help with social media, a "pro" version of a design app, or a premium email service. At the time, it only feels like $20 or $50. But when you have ten of these running, you’re losing hundreds of dollars every month on things you might not even be using.

Audit Your Expenses

I want you to set aside just one hour this week. Pull up your last three months of bank statements and look for any recurring charges. Ask yourself these three simple questions for every single one:

  • Have I used this in the last 30 days? If the answer is no, cancel it immediately. You can always sign back up later if you truly need it.

  • Is there a free version that does the same thing? Many times, we pay for "gold" plans when the "free" or "basic" plan has everything we actually need.

  • Am I paying for two things that do the same job? I often see owners paying for three different ways to talk to their team or two different ways to track tasks. Pick one and cut the rest.

By simply cleaning up these "ghost" expenses, most of my clients save 10% on their overhead in the first week. It’s like finding money in an old coat pocket!

2. Work Smarter: Use Simple Systems Instead of Hiring

One of the biggest costs for any small business is people. I love teams, but in 2026, hiring a new person should be your last resort, not your first move. When things get busy, our first thought is often, "I need an assistant." But many times, what you actually need is a better way to handle the work you already have.

Simple Automation Systems

This is where growing the right way becomes real. Instead of adding a full salary to your expenses, look for simple ways to let technology do the heavy lifting. I'm talking about things that take five minutes to set up but save you five hours a week:

  • Automatic Scheduling: Use a tool that lets clients book their own appointments. This stops the back-and-forth emails that waste so much of your day.

  • Auto-Replies: Set up simple responses for common customer questions.

  • Simple Bookkeeping: Use systems that talk to your bank so you aren't spending hours typing in receipts.

When you use simple systems to handle the "boring" stuff, you free up your time to focus on the work that actually makes money. You save on payroll, and you save yourself from the stress of managing more people before you’re ready.

3. The Power of the Ask: Renegotiate Your Routine Costs

When was the last time you asked your internet provider for a better deal? Or talked to your main supplier about a discount? Most business owners just pay the bill when it arrives. But everything in business is a conversation.

Negotiation and Partnership

I always tell my clients to look at their top five biggest bills, things like your office rent, your main suppliers, or your insurance. Then, pick up the phone. Here is exactly what I say:

"I’ve been a loyal customer for a long time, and I want to keep working with you. However, I’m looking at my budget for the year. Is there anything we can do to bring this monthly cost down?"

You would be shocked at how often the answer is "Yes." Suppliers would much rather give you a 10% discount than lose your business entirely. You can also ask about a lower service level that fits your current budget better.

This isn't about being "cheap." It's about being smart. I call this "Scope-to-Budget" thinking. We make sure the service you are getting matches the budget you have.

Why This Matters for Your Growth

Cutting costs isn't just about saving pennies. It’s about building a solid foundation so you can grow without falling over. When you trim the waste, you have more room to improve the parts of your business that matter most, like your marketing or customer experience.

Scaling for Growth

In my 25 years as a consultant, I’ve learned that the most successful businesses aren’t always the ones making the most money. They are the ones that run well. When you keep your costs low and focus on the systems that run your business, you put yourself in a better position to grow the right way.

If you feel stuck or like your expenses are out of control, don't wait. Small changes today can create more freedom tomorrow.
