The One Page Your Business Plan Actually Needs to Work

If I had a dollar for every entrepreneur I’ve met who spent six months writing a fifty-page business plan only to let it collect dust in a drawer, I’d have retired years ago.
Most people think a business plan needs to be a thick binder full of complicated charts and words that sound like they came out of a corporate textbook. But here is the truth after 25 years in this industry: a long, complicated plan is often just a fancy way to procrastinate.
In my experience, the more complex the plan, the less likely you are to actually follow it. If you are a startup or a small business owner, you don’t need a manifesto. You need a map. You need one page that tells you exactly where you are going and how you are going to get there.
At The CCG Agency, I focus on Business Plan Development that actually works in the real world. I help you build the systems that run your business so you can focus on what you do best, serving your customers and getting paid.
Let’s talk about why "less is more" and what that one essential page should look like.
The Trap of the 50-Page Plan
Why do so many new business owners feel the need to write a book before they even open their doors? Usually, it’s because they’ve been told that’s what "real" businesses do.
But let’s be honest: by the time you finish writing page fifty, the market has probably changed. Your first customer has probably told you they want something different than what you planned. If your plan is too rigid, you’ll get stuck trying to follow a path that doesn't exist anymore.
I call this "getting buried in planning." It’s that feeling where you have so many ideas and so much paperwork that you end up doing nothing at all. You get stuck in the planning phase because it feels safer than the doing phase.
A one-page plan forces you to be clear. It forces you to cut the fluff and focus on your business foundation. If you can't explain your business on one page, you probably don't understand it well enough yet.

The One Page: Your Business Foundation
This isn't just about saving paper. It's about clarity. This one page, which I often call the Executive Summary or the Action Roadmap, is the heartbeat of your company. It is the document you look at every Monday morning to make sure you are still on track.
When I work with clients on Business Plan Development, I make sure this page covers the five things that actually matter:
1. The Problem You Solve
Nobody buys a product or a service just because it exists. They buy it because they have a problem and they want it to go away. If you can't clearly state the problem your customers are facing, you won't be able to sell them the solution.
2. Your Simple Solution
This is where you explain what you do in plain English. No jargon. No "synergy" or "paradigm shifts." Just: "I provide X to help people achieve Y."
3. Who is Paying You?
You cannot sell to everyone. If your target market is "anybody with a wallet," your marketing budget will be gone in a week. Your one-page plan needs to define exactly who your ideal customer is.
4. How You Make Money
This is the part many entrepreneurs skip because they’re too focused on the "vision." But a business without a clear way to bring in income is just a hobby. How much do you charge? How many sales do you need to cover your bills? Knowing these numbers is how you start growing your business the right way.
5. The Systems That Run Your Business
A plan is useless if you don't have the tools to carry it out. This section outlines the basic steps you take every day. Who answers the phone? How do you get new leads? What happens after a customer pays? These are the systems that take the weight off your shoulders.

Why Simplicity Wins Every Time
I’ve seen businesses fail not because they didn't have a good idea, but because they tried to do too much at once. They tried to build a skyscraper before they finished the basement.
When you focus on a one-page plan, you are building a solid business foundation. You are making sure the core of your company is healthy before you try to scale.
Think of your one-page plan as a living document. It shouldn't be perfect. It should be useful. You should be able to cross things out, change your mind, and update it as you learn more about your customers.
This simplicity allows you to move fast. In today’s market, speed is a major advantage. While your competitor is still proofreading page thirty-two of their business plan, you could already be on your third customer.
Leveraging 25 Years of Experience
When I started The CCG Agency, I did it because I wanted to provide the kind of hands-on, affordable guidance that small business owners actually need. I didn't want to be another "vendor" who just hands over a document and disappears.
I wanted to be a partner.
With over 25 years of experience, I’ve seen what works and, more importantly, what doesn't. I know that the most successful businesses aren't the ones with the most complicated spreadsheets, they are the ones with the clearest focus.
I help you strip away the noise. Whether you need help with Business Plan Development from scratch or you just need a coach to help you figure out why you’re getting stuck, I’m here to work side-by-side with you.

Stop Planning and Start Growing
The world doesn't need another unread business plan. It needs your business.
If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by the planning overload of starting or growing your company, it’s time to simplify. You don't need a hundred-page document to prove you are serious. You just need a clear roadmap that gives you the confidence to take the next step.
Building the systems that run your business doesn't have to be a headache. It’s about making small, smart choices every day that lead to long-term stability.
I’d love to help you build that foundation. Let’s take all those big ideas in your head and get them onto one page so you can finally get to work.
